The Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation aims to help change the lives of people most in need by funding projects run by registered charities that support:
o Amateur sport.
o Care needs and caring responsibilities.
o Homelessness.
o Mental health needs.
o Older people.
o People coping with physical and intellectual disability.
o People leaving care.
o People recovering from drug and substance misuse.
o Terminal illness and life-limiting conditions.
o Victims of domestic abuse, and
o Victims of modern slavery.
The Foundation also aims to support medical research supported by registered charities that are also Association of Medical Research Council members that could lead to preventing or slowing the onset of a condition or to lessen its symptoms.
The other main aim of the Foundation, which constitutes about 50% of the funding it allocates, is to support the Roman Catholic Church, particularly in areas where the Church and its associated registered charities have a focus on non-conditional outward facing work, often where there is an overlap with some of the Foundation’s other aims.
Much of the Foundation’s focus is on how projects help people out of poverty and to live as independently as possible. Since 2016, the Foundation has awarded approximately 450 grants totalling over £40 million to registered charities in England, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland.
There is a geographical restriction to the Foundation’s funding in that all the charitable projects that the Foundation supports must be based in England, Wales, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland and be for the benefit of people living in one or more of those jurisdictions. There is a slight preference for projects located in and around the areas where the grant-making income comes from (a number of these locations are mentioned in the Trust's Annual Report, especially after page 43). Ultimately, the Foundation aims to fund projects that make a difference, have an impact on people’s lives, have a track record of doing so and that can evidence this impact.
During the year ended 31st March 2023, the Foundation awarded 121 grants totalling £10,128,262. Grants ranged from £4,000 (to the Mary Stevens Hospice) to £1 million (to The Passage, a homelessness charity highlighting the links between modern slavery and homelessness in London).
Details of all grants awarded during the year can be found on pages 35 to 37 of the Foundation’s annual accounts.
The Foundation has a single-page website. This lists its current funding priorities but doesn’t include any information about a formal application process. Further information about the Foundation is available on the Charity Commission website and, in particular, its Annual Report and Financial Statements.
Charities interested in applying are advised to contact the Foundation at the address provided below to enquire about the availability of grant support.
