Victim Support's Children and Young People's Supporters Toolkit

This World Children’s Day, Victim Support shared their Children & Young People’s Supporters Toolkit – this is aimed at anyone working with Children & Young People (CYP) in any way, whether direct support or in managing CYP related services.

The Wales Hate Support Centre are able to support CYP who are experiencing hate – all hate experiences, including crimes and incidences, where ever and how ever it’s happened in Wales. There’s a preference for young people to involve their parent/carer, but we know that’s not always helpful for that young person – young people aged 13+ are able to access our service independently.

Our Young People Supporters Toolkit is a range of resources to help you to understand the impact that hate has on young people in Wales, tools to help you to understand them and also some shared good practice from our specialist service.

The Young People Supporters Toolkit includes:

-       Victim Support’s ‘Conversations with children and young people affected by hate crime in Wales’ freely accessible research in English and Welsh

-       Some additional guidance on supporting young people and youth focused organisations and institutions in Wales is below, including advice on accessibility.

-       Referring young people to the service is covered above, and the relevant referral forms are below.

-       If you want to find out more about hate crime and what you can expect when you report a hate crime, take a look at the VS Support Booklet available in English and Welsh through Dropbox here - please note this is aimed at an adult audience and not suitable for young children. Please let us know if you need to receive this via another platform.

-       My Support Space is a free service that provides interactive support guides, including a fantastic selection of supporter guides for people and family members supporting victims of crime.

Children and Young People (CYP) Resource is attached in bilingual format, providing visual information on what Hate Crime is, understanding hate related bullying, how parents can help and information on building resilience - each page is accompanied with parent and teacher notes. Available through Dropbox here.

-       Contact the team to chat about your organisation, department or group signing up to the hate Crime Charter or to discuss becoming a part of the Hate Crime Champion Network: Hate.CrimeWales(at)victimsupport.org.uk

Please reach out if you’d like to chat about anything included in this Toolkit, or any of the services that we can provide.
