Blog Post for PAVO
Hi, I’m Gayle Harris and I attended the Start Well Children and Young People’s Network meeting earlier this week.
I am the Business Development Manager at Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales (BGC Wales).
We are a National Wales Wide Youth Work Organisation that is almost 100 years old (previously Boys Clubs of Wales) with over 130 affiliated member clubs.
We are a small team who offer support to our affiliated clubs to deliver quality Youth Work across Wales.
Our affiliated clubs are varied and range from Boxing Clubs, Football and Rugby Clubs to more general voluntary sector youth work organisations.
We offer support to our clubs in starting up and running a club from scratch through an e-learning module and a handbook.
We have a 28-bed bunkhouse style Lodge in Bettws, Bridgend that we hire out and offer packages for groups (at a discount for affiliated members).
We also have expertise in International Youth Exchanges and are currently taking 5 club leaders on an exploratory visit to the USA to give them a first-hand experience of taking young people away for a potentially life changing experience.
We have a Youth Forum that represents many of our clubs and have recently secured some funding for social action projects to improve their communities and clubs.
Annually, we offer opportunities for the Wye Valley 100-mile Canoe Test, the BGC Essex Adventure Weekend and the chance for young people to go to Germany on an exchange!
Our National BGC Wales Football and Rugby panels hold trials every year for young people to play for BGC Wales and earn a cap! We have recently set up two Girls Rugby Teams too! Our Boys Teams have recently been to Holland to play against the Netherlands National Teams. The Football Teams play annually against BGC Scotland too!
My role is to help sustain the clubs by offering support in fundraising including searches, tips, a funding bulletin weekly, training and help with writing small bids.
If you are a youth or youth sports club/organisation in the voluntary sector and would like to affiliate to us, please get in touch on:
