The J J Charitable Trust’s Literacy Small Grants Scheme seeks to improve the effectiveness of literacy teaching in primary and secondary education for children with learning difficulties, including dyslexia, with a particular focus on areas of social need and those who are at risk of non-inclusion in society and the world of work.

This is a small grants scheme that funds UK charities, community groups and Community Interest Companies that are directly helping children and young people develop literacy skills, with a focus on supporting those with learning difficulties such as lifelong learning disorders like dyslexia.

The Trust is keen to see applications for projects that use volunteers and reading mentors and those that help during transitional points. For example, when students move from primary to secondary school, or when they transition to further education, college, or the workplace.

Applications for a revenue grant of between £5,000 and £20,000 are considered for literacy support at any primary or secondary key stage. Multi-year grants, over a maximum period of 3 years, are available.

Examples of work the Trust has funded previously can be viewed on its 360Giving page by searching for ‘literacy’ and filter by The JJ Charitable Trust to see its literacy grants.

Funding is not available for:

o Capital costs.
o English lessons for children learning English as an additional language.
o individuals.
o Organisations registered or only working overseas,
or
o Schools – unless this is for additional provision outside of timetabled lessons.

The Trust has three application deadlines each year, on:

o 4th March for the Spring grant round.
o 3rd June for the Summer grant round,
and
o 1st October for the Autumn grant round.

The next deadline for applications is therefore on Wednesday 4th March 2026.

Further information, guidance and an online application form is available on the Trust’s website. Applicants should expect to receive a decision within eight weeks of each application deadline.
