The Astor Foundation provides small grants for UK registered charities. Its primary area of interest is medical research on a broad front rather than in specialised fields. This can include general medical equipment or equipment for use in research, or grants to cover travelling and subsistence expenses for doctors and students studying abroad.

In general, the Foundation prefers to support the start-up and initial stages of new projects and filling in gaps or shortfalls.

In addition to its primary priority of medical research, the Foundation also supports projects that benefit:

o Children and youth groups.
o The disabled.
o The countryside.
o The arts.
o Sport.
o Carers groups,
and
o Animal welfare.

UK registered charities may apply for a grant of between £250 and £1,500. Higher awards are occasionally made. There is no specified requirement for matched funding.

During the year ending 5th April 2024, the Foundation awarded 71 grants totalling £99,500 (2023: 65 grants totalling £108,500; 2022: 68 grants totalling £113,500; 2021: 74 grants totalling £110,250). Grants were mostly for between £250 and £1,500 with the occasional higher award.

A list of all grant recipients is over the last two years is provided on pages 11-15 of the Foundation’s annual accounts. This is worth looking at as it lists grant awards under a range of headings that include Advice and Counselling, Armed Forces, Emergency Services and Maritime.

Applications should be made in writing by 31st August annually for the October meeting and by 28th February annually for the April meeting.

The next application deadline is therefore on Sunday 31st August 2025
