___________
Green Allotments is a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation, founded in 2022, that aims to creating new, not-for-profit, private allotment sites for local communities at an affordable rent through its New Allotment Sites Fund.
The charity is currently seeking passionate people who would like to become involved in setting up a new allotment site in their area. Applications are invited from anyone who is interested in allotments and willing to collaborate with Green Allotments to create a new area. Green Allotments’ focus is on community-led management and environmental stewardship to ensure a sustainable future for allotments. The charity’s priority is to create as many new allotment sites as possible.
Grants of up to £50,000 per acre are available for new allotment sites in England. Please note that, for this stage of the funding programme, the Charity is unlikely to fund new allotment sites where the cost of land purchase is more than £50,000 per acre.
Green Allotments will buy and retain ownership of the land and create the new allotment site, providing new allotments for the community.
A major aspect of The New Allotment Site Fund is communities telling Green Allotments about suitable land for new allotment sites. The following information can be used to help potential applicants find suitable land:
1. Size of land: approximately 1 to 5 acres is a practical size for an allotment site, with space for additional biodiversity enhancements/improvements. A bigger size may cause too much disruption to the local community. A smaller size may mean there are insufficient plot numbers to get active community-led management and environmental stewardship going on the new allotment site.
2. Allotment sites need to be close to where people live, so that they can get to their allotment often.
3. Road safety is a major concern for councils and residents. Land that cannot be safely accessed (e.g. on a fast road, or in an area with heavy traffic) might not be best suited to allotments.
4. Please take into account that residents who live next to the land might not want increased traffic or extra cars parking in their streets.
5. The most suitable sites for allotments tend to be land that is slightly to the edge of housing, or on the edge of a settlement, or in a very quiet area.
Funding is not available for:
o Allotments outside England.
o Councils and statutory organisations, or
o For-profit organisations.
No form filling is required at this stage. Interested organisations and individuals are invited to get in touch with Green Allotments with the following information:
o Who you are and where you are based.
o How to contact you.
o Some brief information about the land you have seen for a new allotment site.
o Why you think this land will make a good allotment site, and
o A little bit about allotments in your area, if there are any.
Green Allotments can be contacted at any time. There are no application deadlines.
Further information is available on the Green Allotments website.
