Understanding the role and responsibility attached to being a trustee of a charity, or playing a role in the governance of a voluntary organisation, is key to ensuring effective management and maximising the benefits that flow from your volunteering in these roles. Whether new to a governance role, or an old hand, it is important to review the rules and best practice that determine how you should act, and reflect on whether your organisation is doing things as well as it could.
In the past, PAVO has delivered general ‘Being a Trustee’ training to individual trustees on a regular basis – both in person and on line. This has enabled many new and existing trustees to question the practice of their organisations – but it has also revealed how difficult it can be for individual trustees to argue the case for change in the face of long established ways of behaving.
Talking openly about practice in one organisation in front of members of other organisations can also be difficult.
The recommendation of the Charity Governance Code is that a trustee board ‘should be committed to its development, including trustee induction, individual learning and whole board learning’ and should put in place ‘constructive and regular processes for reviewing the performance of individual trustees, the chair, and the board as a whole’. 
PAVO is therefore offering the boards of charities, and the management committees of other types of voluntary organisations, the opportunity for bespoke training in governance. In return for a commitment from the board / committee that all members will strive to attend, we will work with your organsation to understand concerns or identify areas where a refresher in your collective knowledge is required and develop a training offer that helps to equip your team with the knowledge it needs to be more effective in the governance of your organisation.
Delivered free on line or at a PAVO office – or for a small charge if delivered in person at your organisation – the training will seek to give you a greater understanding of how to deliver your objectives, identify and allay any concerns in current practice, and develop recommendations for future action that can help your organisation grow its capacity and ability to deliver on behalf of your beneficiaries or members.
