Small to large grants are available to UK registered charities working in the UK and/or overseas in the areas of health and medicine, arts and culture, education and training, heritage, and human rights and social justice.

Application deadline: none – applications may be made at any time via the online application form available on the Foundation’s website. The Foundation considers applications in March and September each year.

The Michael Bishop Foundation is a grant-making charity with its principal office in Leicestershire. The Foundation awards a limited number of small to quite substantial grants to UK registered charities working in the UK and/or overseas. The Foundation regularly donates between £2 million and £3 million each year to a wide variety of charitable causes, principally in its 5 focus areas of:

o Advancement of health and medicine.
o Arts and culture.
o Education and training.
o Heritage, 
and
o Human rights and social justice.

The Foundation may occasionally fund organisations or projects outside the above focus areas. Charities that wish to apply for such a grant are advised to contact the Foundation before making an application to ascertain whether it will be considered.

During the year ended 5th April 2024, the Foundation awarded grants totalling £2,556,203 (2023: £2,234,331).

Grants were categorised as follows:

o Advancement of health and medicine: £!50,000.
o Arts and culture: £869,000.
o Education and training: £572,603.
o Heritage: £25,000.
o Human rights and social justice: £389,000, 
and
o General charitable purposes: £550.600.

A list of all grants awarded during the year is provided on pages 13-14 of the Foundation’s annual accounts, while some examples of funded charities are listed on page 4 of the accounts and on its website.

Funding is not available for:

o Animal welfare.
o Organisations that are not UK charities.
o Activities outside the UK (except the Glendonbrook Foundation).
o General fundraising appeals.
o Individuals.
o Overseas travel.
o One off events or festivals.
o Advancement of religion.
o Sports and recreation.
o Work which has already taken place.
o NHS hospital trusts.
o Campaigning or lobbying activities.
o Endowments or contributions to other grant making charities.
o Websites, Publications or Seminars.
o Property or vehicle purchase.
o Applications that have been turned down in the previous 12 months.
o Applications that do not fall within our five main areas of focus.
o Grants larger than an applying organisation’s annual turnover, 
or
o New organisations that do not have a track record of delivery or do not have at least one year’s published accounts available for review.

Applications are considered twice each year, in March and September.
