___________
The Oak Trust is a small grant-making charity that awards a relatively modest number of grants each year to UK registered charities working in areas of the world where the needs from deprivation, natural disaster or conflict are beyond what the national government can provide. Preference is given to small charities with an annual turnover of less than £1 million. For charities working in the UK, those providing services in East Anglia, North London and East London are more likely to receive a favourable response. Overseas causes are frquently supported. The Trust’s funding preferences are:
o Environmental causes.
o Medical causes, and
o People who are disadvantaged.
During the year ended 13th October 2023, the Trust awarded 27 grants totalling £22,000 (2022: 22 grants totalling £24,000). Awards ranged from £250 to £2,000. The vast majority of grants made were for £1,000 or less.
A list of all awards made during the year can be viewed on pages 9-10 of the Trust’s annual accounts.
The Trust normally takes the following issues into consideration when reviewing grant applications:
o How challenging the raising of the money for the particular cause will be.
o How much the charity spends on fund-raising and administration.
o People who are disadvantaged (in the widest sense).
o Personal development through adventure.
o The environment.
o The number of people assisted per £ spent.
o The viability of the charity and where the rest of the money will come from.
o Whether a small grant will really make a difference to the charity.
o Whether the charity will be able to bring life-changing benefits to its clients, and
o Whether the charity works locally, nationally or internationally.
Further information, guidance and an online application form is available on the Trust’s website.
The Trust meets twice each year to review applications. The next deadline for applications is Wednesday 1st October 2025. The following application deadline is scheduled for Wednesday 1st April 2026.
