High Sheriff hosts special thank you event for Powys volunteers

Volunteers from across Powys were treated to a special afternoon tea hosted by William Watkins, High Sheriff of Powys, at the Severn Arms Hotel in Penybont on Thursday 5 June, as part of Volunteers’ Week celebrations.

The event recognised and thanked Powys Befriending Service volunteers for the vital role they play in supporting people in Powys.

Guests enjoyed a traditional afternoon tea, met fellow volunteers and shared their experiences. The celebration was made possible through the generous support of Radnor Hills.

During the event, the High Sheriff presented volunteers with thank-you cards and commemorative pin badges in recognition of their dedication and service.

Volunteer Stella Constant said: “I’ve had a wonderful time meeting other volunteers today.

“I’ve volunteered with Powys Befriending Service for four years and have had the privilege of supporting six lovely people who have led fascinating lives. I get just as much from the experience as they do.”

Powys Befriending Service, delivered by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) and funded by the Powys Regional Partnership Board, currently has 73 volunteers supporting people aged 50 and over who are experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

Through regular home visits, telephone calls and group activities, volunteers help people stay connected to their communities, build confidence and develop social connections.

William Watkins, High Sheriff of Powys, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome volunteers from across Powys and thank them for their dedication and service.

“The impact of volunteering is often far greater than people realise. By giving their time, these volunteers help tackle loneliness and improve wellbeing. Their contribution is invaluable.”

Clair Swales, PAVO CEO, said: “We are incredibly grateful to our Powys Befriending Service volunteers and were delighted to celebrate their contribution during Volunteers’ Week.

“I would also like to thank the volunteers who were unable to attend today, and Radnor Hills for their generous support.”

Derek Emery, who has volunteered with Powys Befriending Service for two years, said: “The service creates genuine friendships because volunteers are carefully matched with people who share similar interests.”

“The person I support smiles much more than they used to.”
