DBS Workshops

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. DBS also maintains the Adults’ and Childrens’ Barred Lists and makes considered decisions as to whether an individual should be included on one or both of these lists and barred from engaging in regulated activity.
We deliver free workshops, each tailored to individual organisations or sectors, focusing on two main themes – DBS checks and barring referrals.
We have planned a calendar of workshops specifically for the Voluntary and Community Sector aimed to help understanding the different elements of DBS, and how this related to your organisation. These have also proven to be excellent opportunities to network and share best practice. Please take a look at the following workshops that will be delivered as part of this programme:
DBS Overview Workshop – Tuesday 8th July (12:00 pm – 13:00 pm) & Friday 31st October (09:30 am – 10:30 am)
This 60 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The role of the Disclosure and Barring service
- Understanding DBS Checks and role eligibility, including levels of check and workforce
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- An Organisation’s duties and responsibilities in regard to referring to DBS
- Understand the DBS barring process and the consequences of being placed on one or both Barred Lists
DBS Disclosure Workshop – Wednesday 13th August (10:00 am – 11:30 am) & Wednesday 10th December (12:00 pm – 13:30 pm)
The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
- The different levels of DBS check
- Eligibility, and when an employee is eligible for a check
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- What the DBS Update Service is, and its benefits
- The safe recruitment practices that can be in place, with DBS checks forming a part of these
DBS Barring Workshop – Tuesday 14th October (10:00 am – 11:30 am) & Tuesday 20th January (12:00 pm – 13:30 pm)
The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- When a DBS barring referral should be made, including when the legal duty is met
- The three different referral routes
- How to make a good quality referral
- The consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals
- The consequences of being included on one or both Barred Lists
DBS Information Gathering Workshop – Tuesday 25nd November (13:00 pm – 14:30 pm) & Tuesday 10th February (11:00 am – 12:30 pm)
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- Why requests are made by DBS and what we do with that information
- The legal duty placed on organisations to provide this information
- The legislation that underpins these requests and allows for sharing with confidence
- The importance of responding to requests to safeguard vulnerable groups
DBS Update Service Workshop – Wednesday 17th December (12:00 pm – 13:30 pm) & Tuesday 24th February (10:00 am – 11:30 am)
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- What the Update Service is (and is not)
- Which DBS certificates can be registered with the service
- Benefits of the service to applicants and recruiters
- Status checking & interpreting the results
- Update Service and Home-Based positions
- Using the Update Service when recruitment decisions are made off site
DBS Barring Referral Service Workshop – Friday 12th December (10:00 am – 11:00 am) & Tuesday 17th February (13:00 pm – 14:00 pm)
The 60 minute workshop will cover:
- Who has a legal duty to refer
- When a referral should be made
- How to make a Barring Referral
DBS Harmful Behaviour Workshop – Tuesday 11th November (10:00 am – 11:30 am) & Wednesday 4th February (11:00 am – 12:30 pm)
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- What we mean by harmful behaviour
- Safeguarding, Abuse and Neglect
- Relevant Conduct and Risk of Harm
- Harmful behaviour and the transferability of risk
- How to make a Barring referral to DBS
