Small, Medium and Large Grants up to and over £50,000 are available to UK registered charities and universities that are working to promote education, international friendship and understanding, and world peace and development in the UK and/or overseas.

The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Settlements grant-making policy is focused on concentrating its resources on the following purposes:

o The support of education in the UK and overseas.
o The promotion of peace through international friendship and understanding, 
and
o To support further sustainable progress in the developing world.

To achieve these objectives the Trustees accept applications for funding from the following applicants:

o UK registered charities undertaking projects in the UK and abroad. Candidates are required to demonstrate that they have a minimum of 30% matching funding in place for the trustees to consider their application, and
o UK universities to fund scholarships that support the key principles of the trust, providing access to education for those otherwise unable to access the opportunities that education provides.

All grants awarded are project-based and must have an educational aim, element or content.  For overseas projects, the Trust will consider funding aid projects that are essential to enable education or personal development activities to take place, such as (please note that this is not an exclusive list):

o Food.
o Medical supplies.
o The provision of basic facilities, 
and
o Water, including water treatment facilities.

The following grants are available:

1. Small and Medium Grants up to £50,000 may be submitted at any time and are considered every month.

2. Large Grants over £50,000 have annual application deadlines of 28th February and 31st August for consideration at the Charity’s March and September meetings respectively.

Please note that the Charity expects all applicants to have sought and secured matched funding. Applicants that can evidence this are likely to be prioritised for grant support. If an applicant has raised 50% of their budget the Charity will consider awarding matched funding up to a maximum of 50%. However, if the applicant has raised less than 50% of their budget the Charity will only consider awarding a maximum of 30% funding.

During the year ended 31st December 2023, the Charity awarded grants totalling £1,898,408 (2022: £1,062,669; 2021: £1,143,219; 2020: £1,024,315).

Grants awarded were categorised as follows:

o Educational projects: £708,287.
o Educational projects encompassing world peace: £175,500, 
and
o Overseas education: £1,014,621.

Funding is not available for:

o Core funding or organisational running costs.
o Projects or activities that have already started (i.e. the Charity does not provide retrospective funding), 
or
o The construction of buildings in the UK.

The remaining 2025 deadline for Large Grant applications of over £50,000 is Sunday 31st August 2025 for consideration in September 2025.

Applications for a Small and Medium Grant of up to £50,000 may be made at any time.
