The William and Jane Morris Fund (also known as The Morris Fund and Morris Church Conservation Grants) was founded in 1939 following the death of May Morris (1862-1938), a leading artist of the Arts and Crafts movement. May was the youngest daughter of the Pre-Raphaelite artist and designer, William Morris (1834-1896). The Morris Fund is managed by the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Grants between £500 and £5,000, with no matched funding requirement, are available for places of worship in the UK, including churches, chapels and other places of worship undertaking restoration projects, providing the building or monument was erected before 1896, the year in which William Morris died.

Grants can be used for smaller programmes of work for the conservation of decorative or non-structural features, for example:

o Furniture.
o Internal monuments and tombs.
o Sculpture.
o Stained glass windows,
and
o Wall paintings.

Please note that completed work must be certified by an appropriate professional and carried out according to the principles of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).

Funding is not available for:

o Alterations or decorations of buildings.
o Anything built or erected after 1896.
o Bells or organs.
o Electrical rewiring and the repair or installation of central heating systems.
o Items on the outside or in grounds of the building.
o Major structural repairs and fabric maintenance.
o Projects outside the UK,
or
o Work that has already been completed.

The Morris Fund operates two application rounds each year:

1. 31st March annually with decisions made by 31st May, and
2. 31st August annually with decisions made by 30 November.

The next deadline for applications is therefore on Sunday 31st August 2025.
