NSPCC Evaluation of the Speak Out Stay Safe programme

NSPCC Learning has published findings from an independent evaluation of the impact of the Speak out Stay safe (SOSS) service, a safeguarding programme for children aged 5- to 11-years-old, looking at children’s understanding of abuse and harm and their help-seeking behaviour.

Findings from an evaluation of a sample of UK schools who had received the SOSS programme compared with a sample of UK schools that had not received SOSS in the last two years include: children and school staff viewed SOSS as important and relevant; and the majority of primary school children have a good understanding of what abusive behaviour looks like and which trusted adults they can speak to. The evaluation identified gaps in pupils’ knowledge around neglect and sexual abuse; and the programme appeared to have a smaller impact on the help-seeking behaviours of pupils aged 5-7, compared to 7-to 11-year-olds.
