Volunteers deliver

A volunteer tells us about her experience as a Covid-19 Health and Care Volunteer in Powys.

Over the past two months, over 400 people across Powys have signed up through Powys Volunteer Centre to help as Powys Covid-19 Health and Care Volunteers, in response to a call for volunteers from the Powys Community Sector Emergency Response Team (C-SERT).  Around 35 of these volunteers have been deployed to support their local GPs and pharmacies with deliveries. One of the delivery volunteers explained why she got involved:

“I wanted to contribute something useful during the coronavirus pandemic. It was good to feel that I was providing a service, which was helping others. I have been collecting and delivering prescription medication to those self-isolating or sick during the pandemic, and it is obvious that this service is very much needed. Many of the clients have expressed their gratitude for the deliveries.”

In partnership with Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board, all C-SERT volunteers are given online training in areas such as safeguarding and infection control. PAVO’s Community Connectors then work with the GPs and pharmacies to co-ordinate the delivery volunteers.

“It’s great to have a personal point of contact from PAVO, so that I could liaise with them over the details of jobs they sent me. Several times I’ve had to get back to them with difficulties over prescription pick ups or addresses and they are always quick to respond and very helpful. I certainly feel supported and appreciated.”

“I am very pleased to be able to contribute something useful towards the national effort in combating the coronavirus. It has been a privilege to be able to help by collecting and delivering essential prescription medication.”
