Course Outline

The aim of the workshop is to enable participants to be more comfortable with talking about suicide and self harm with young people and adults.

  • Self care when attending training about potentially distressing topics
  • What is suicide?
  • How to support someone who is suicidal: examples of things to say, signposting to support, self-care
  • What is self-harm?
  • What issues does self-harm raise for workers>
  • Why do people self-harm?
  • What are the needs of people who self-harm?
  • Strategies – what to say/what not to say, coping strategies, harm minimisation, making a support map
  • Strategies to support ourselves as workers
  • What to do in an emergency
