Diversity
Diversity is about recognising, accepting and valuing difference rather than being afraid of it. It is an appreciation that while we are all part of a single nation with shared rights and responsibilities we are also individuals with our own talents, ambitions and priorities.
Equal opportunities
• Fairness and equality of treatment for people in relation to access to services and care
• There are many laws in the UK regarding equal opportunities
• Fairness, respect, and equality of treatment for everyone
Prejudices
Allowing prejudice to get in the way, even unintentionally, may mean that we
• Fail to see a person’s real qualities and allow unnecessary barriers to stop us having a productive relationship with them
• Treat certain people unfairly, which could lead to antagonism between us and them, and could possibly even be unlawful
Ethnicity and culture
Discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and culture occurs when someone is harassed or treated unfairly because of where they or their family are from. It can also be because of their culture or colour of their skin.
Religion and belief
Discrimination on the basis of religion or belief occurs when someone is harassed or treated unfairly because of their faith or religious belief. This includes people being treated in a certain way because they do not have any religious beliefs.
Sexual orientation
Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation occurs when someone is harassed or treated unfairly because they are gay, a lesbian or bisexual.
Gender
Discrimination on the basis of gender occurs when someone is harassed or treated unfairly because of their sex. This can include inappropriate behaviour towards a work colleague or expecting someone to only be suitable for certain roles, such as manual work for men or childcare for women.
