The free training sessions are provided by Gareth Jenkins (EFFRO) and delivered via Teams.

Please book your places via email to practice.development(at)powys.gov.uk and please state which sessions, who will be attending and their email addresses for the teams invite.

 Dementia Friend Information Session (1 Hr) – 5th March 2024, 10am – 11.30am

·               Become an Alzheimer Society dementia friend (route to becoming a dementia ambassador) 

·               Increase awareness on what dementia is and how it can affect people 

·               Activities Produced by Alzheimer Society

Communication Strategies – How we can better help someone living with dementia ( 2 Hrs) – 7th May 2024, 1pm – 3pm

·                Discuss why communication is so important for people living with dementia. 

·                Overview of communication barriers that dementia may cause (go through some potential symptoms and share experiences) 

·                Communication tips and ideas to make communication easier  

·                Simple Reminiscence  

·                Thinking about how we word things 

·                Understanding behaviours and how to respond like Dealing with distress – “Feel with not Deal with.” 

·                Communication methods to try (Validation and Reality Orientation) 

 

Creating a Dementia Friendly Space (1.5 Hrs) – 11th April 2024, 10am – 11.30am

·                Tips for adapting the home 

·                How to create an accessible and safe home for someone with dementia 

·                Simple considerations for adaptations to make a home more comfortable and useable 

 

Person Centred Approach in Dementia Care (1.5 Hrs) – 6th June 2024, 9.30am – 11.30am

·                Overview of person-centred care for someone with dementia going through the 4 main elements for PCA. 

·                Encourages professionals to review their workloads, routines and tasks. 

·                Looks at the 1% rule – making regular small improvements to be more Person Centred. 

·                Uses Maslow to think about what's important for us as individuals, then asks us to translate what that means against the 4 main elements of PCA 

 

Reminiscence Therapy – How we can better help those living with dementia (2 Hrs) – 9th July 2024, 10am – 12pm

·                Overview of reminiscence therapy and its benefits (how it helps physically, personally and emotionally) 

·                Interactive session with numerous activities which encourages us to Reminisce as often as possible, every day. 

·                Goes over the differences of “Reminiscing Vs Remembering” 

·                Use of questioning and improving our skills to “Swim in the Memories” to have long reminiscent conversations. 

·                Practical support on how to implement the activities and create your own 

·                Talks about the multi-sensory approach and how using the senses is important. 

·                Discusses how Person-Centred Reminiscence is important. 

·                Covers Muscle memory and capabilities. 

 

Cognitive Stimulation – How we can better help those living with dementia (2 Hrs) – 15th August 2024, 2pm – 4pm

·                Overview of the concepts of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy 
Discusses what Neuro plasticity is and what Neural Pathways are. 

·                Discusses what the University College London did for their study and what it showed. 

·                Discusses Stimulation Targets form the University of Alabama. 

·                Discuss Stimulating Activity Ideas based on the CST ethos. 

·                Tips and Techniques that will help you to run engaging 1-2-1 activities or activity sessions including using reminiscence. 

·                Covers Person Centred Activities 

·                Talks about making the “Mundane Magical” making everyday activities fun.  

 

Digital Tools to Support People Living With Dementia ( 1.5 Hrs) – 1st October 2024, 10am – 12pm

·                Overview of Dementia 

·                Looks into different types of technology available that can support people 

·                Links that technology in with how it can support with better care 

·                Reminiscence, Music, sensory and activity apps
