Data 101: An introduction to understanding and using data

An online session to introduce you to some top tips, tools and resources to help you understand and use data effectively

Data is fundamental to how we function as humans. We use data every day, many times a day, probably without even knowing it. It’s data that helps us understand what’s going on and what needs to be done.

Therefore, it’s important, that we have the right data and that we can understand and use it effectively. Our training course offers practical guidance to help build skills and confidence in understanding and using data. In our course we will talk about the different types of data and how to find it. We will guide you through a series of questions designed to help make sure you understand the data you are working with. This will be followed by some techniques to help turn data into knowledge.

By the end of the course you will understand:

  • what data is and how to find it
  • the questions you need to ask to make sure you understand data
  • some basic techniques for using data

This course is for voluntary sector staff or volunteers who are interested in learning more about data. This is a high-level, introductory course aimed at beginners and those new to using data. It is intentionally ‘basic’ in its approach and content. No previous knowledge of data or statistics is required.

This training is delivered by Data Cymru,  who provide a range of specialist support designed to help you find and use data effectively. This training has been arranged as part of ProMo-Cymru’s Third Sector Digital Support Project.
