Cancer and your Mental Health.

If you are living with cancer or supporting a loved one with cancer you will understand how the stress of cancer and its treatment can affect you and your family and how emotionally draining it can be.

The Improving the Cancer Journey in Powys programme funded by Macmillan offers people access to local support and services through trained link workers based in Credu, PAVO and the Bracken Trust.  The Bracken Trust offers counselling to anyone with a cancer diagnosis including family members who are supporting a loved one.

Anyone living with or caring for someone can also arrange to have a supportive and confidential conversation with a trained link worker to discuss their needs, worries or concerns.  These can include any emotional needs.

You can find out more on our website or contact any of the delivery partners directly and ask for support.  You will be asked to complete a simple checklist of your key concerns so the link worker can begin to look at the best sources of support, information, and referral routes ahead of having a more detailed confidential conversation.

Macmillan’s website also has a wealth of information and guidance around cancer and your emotions which may be helpful to anyone who is feeling anxious, scared, fearful or sad following a diagnosis.

Macmillan advises talking to either a professional or to someone you trust about your feelings and how this is impacting on your mental health.  They also have some booklets, an audio book and also specialists online and a forum which people can access.

You don’t have to face cancer alone. So please do reach out, get in touch with one of our delivery partners or talk to someone you trust.  You can also have a look at either the Macmillan site or the Mental Health Foundation website which has a whole host of resources too.
