Covid-19 Vaccine Roll Out

Plans are well advanced in Wales to start the delivery of the vaccines once regulatory approval has been received from the Medicines & Healthcare Regulation Authority (MHRA), and the final sign-off and prioritisation advice has been received from the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisations (JCVI).

Safety and efficacy

For a vaccine to reach the general public, it will have to work and be safe. Many potential vaccines for COVID-19 are being studied and tested. The testing and approvals process has been sped up by prompt funding and a reduction in paperwork. The length of the trials have not been shortened, and the usual safety measures remain in place.

Eligibility

It’s hoped small quantities of a vaccine could be available imminently and it will be prioritised to protect those who are most vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19.

Health and social care workers, care home residents and staff have been prioritised to receive a vaccine first, with roll out to older people in age bands from next year.

The JCVI determines eligibility at a UK level. This is based on knowledge around clinical risk and effectiveness of the vaccine in different groups.

More information on definitions of workers/staff is expected from the JCVI along with recommendations based on vaccine trials data. Their current interim advice is here:
