Mayors of Birmingham and Rhayader get a sneak peek of new visitor attraction, TimeScape Rhayader

Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Muhammad Afzal, met with Mayor of Rhayader, Councillor Lee Price, to see the new developments being made in Rhayader by CARAD, Community Arts Rhayader And District.

Set to open late summer 2022 TimeScape Rhayader is a new visitor attraction operated by CARAD and a redevelopment of Rhayader Museum. It charts Mid Wales' many contributions to the world and covers different perspectives on the area’s rich social and political history as well as the natural sciences of geology, astronomy and ecology.

The two Mayors were shown the new outdoor exhibition area, along with a display of panels by local artist Suzanne Brady.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham was on his annual visit to the Elan Valley hosted by CARAD, Elan Links, the Elan Valley Trust and Dwr Cymru. He spoke enthusiastically on the fine quality of the water from the Elan Valley which has provided water to Birmingham since 1905 and the connection between the two communities.
“Joseph Chamberlain is the father of Birmingham,” said Cllr Afzal. “Birmingham was voted the best city in the world because of this water from the Elan Valley so we salute him and we salute the people of the Elan Valley, whom we still appreciate.”

The Mayors received a history of CARAD as an organisation from Peter Cox MBE, from the 1994 Rhayader and District community play “The Lost Harp / Y Delyn Golledig” (in which Councillor Lee Price participated as a chorus member) to the present day. Current Chair of Trustees Catherine Allan then explained the new vision for TimeScape Rhayader, which includes two fully accessible exhibition floors, space for children’s activities, an outdoor area and nature garden to provide something for everyone, whether locals or curious tourists.

TimeScape Rhayader is volunteer-led and supported. If you would like to volunteer your time and skills, please get in touch via all(at)carad.org.uk or send a text to 07788663172. timescaperhayader.co.uk
