The purpose of the standards is to make sure that everyone in Wales gets consistent and good quality training that’s relevant to their role and responsibilities, and that we, as practitioners, can safeguard people to the best of our ability.
The draft standards are split into six groups (A to F) that reflect the roles and responsibilities of people who may be involved in safeguarding practice. Within the draft standards, each group has a defined set of memorable principles and learning outcomes.
When formally published later this year the standards will apply to people receiving care and support of all ages. We appreciate that some practitioners may specialise in working with adults or children. This will be acknowledged in the training framework that accompanies these standards.
The training framework will set out the minimum expectation for safeguarding training. It will help practitioners understand their role in safeguarding people and to develop their knowledge and skills. The framework will be developed with practitioners who are currently working in a range of agencies. This will take place in June and July 2022.
The implementation of the National Safeguarding Training Standards will represent a step change for practitioners at all levels and for how many organisations operate. That is why as well as suitability of the content of the draft document we are also seeking your views on the opportunities and challenges your organisation will face when embedding the standards.
There are examples of excellent safeguarding practice across Wales. We always encourage sharing good practice and hope the consultation will offer another opportunity for this.
