Call for Evidence - Fuel Poverty Monitor 2022.

National Energy Action (NEA) is a national charity working to end fuel poverty across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Energy Action Scotland (EAS) works to end fuel poverty in Scotland. The UK Fuel Poverty Monitor is the annual investigative report on fuel poverty in the UK and within each of the four nations, published by NEA and EAS.

Please see call for evidence from NEA below.

We are currently living through an energy crisis. In April, the GB energy price cap rose to £1,971 for the average household, when it was previously set at £1,277. For prepayment meter users, the price cap is even higher, set at £2,017. In addition to a high price cap, there has been a limited competitive market beneath the cap level. Prices have significantly increased I  Northern Ireland too, with gas bills trebling in a single year.

With all of this in mind, NEA has estimated that there could be as many as 6.5 million households across the UK currently living in Fuel Poverty. The Chief Executive of Ofgem has recently indicated that in October the price cap could rise to a level as high as £2800. Analysts have predicted it will reach well over £3000.

This year’s Fuel Poverty Monitor is looking to provide an analysis of the impact of the energy crisis on fuel-poor households. In order to do this, we would like to understand your views on:

  • The impact that the energy crisis has already had on fuel poor households
  • How the crisis could manifest itself for fuel poor households this autumn and winter
  • What coping strategies fuel poor households are currently adopting or likely to adopt.
  • The adequacy of the UK Government and Devolved Nations response to date
  • The impact that the energy crisis is having on organisations that provide support to fuel poor households
  • The role of different organisations in tackling the energy crisis this autumn and winter

We will be using the findings of this survey to inform our upcoming report and for the more immediate purpose of feeding the findings back to the industry, governments and regulators to ensure better outcomes for the households that we help.

The survey can be completed within 20 minutes but could take longer if you have the time to input more detailed information in the comment boxes at the start. Here, you will have the opportunity to share any ways in which you have adapted as an organisation to better help households during this crisis.

You can access the survey here: https://eu.surveymonkey.com/r/FPM2022

If possible, please respond by close of business on 31 August 2022. Once you leave the survey platform you will not be able to re-enter. Please therefore try to complete your entire response in one browser session. If you need to take a break, please leave your browser window open. If you are completing the survey on behalf of a number of people within your organisation, NEA can provide a PDF version of the document to enable you to collate feedback from across your organisation. Please reply by email to request this.
