Appeal for storytellers to support the Macmillan Deaf Cancer Support Project media launch.

Macmillan are looking for deaf people affected by cancer across the UK to share their experience to help us raise awareness of a new project to support Deaf people living with cancer.

Please see the request from Macmillan below.

The project:

The Macmillan Deaf Cancer Support Project is a 2-year pilot which will be delivered in partnership with Self Help UK to improve access to cancer information and support for Deaf people across the UK.

Trained Deaf volunteers will provide remote support in BSL including virtual peer support groups, one-on-one remote emotional and practical support and medium level advocacy support in complex cases.

It will launch across the UK in June 2022.

We need your help!

We are looking for storytellers from the deaf community who are willing to share their cancer experience in the local and national media.

We want to raise awareness of the barriers they have faced when it comes to accessing cancer information and support. They do not need to have accessed the Macmillan Deaf Cancer Support Project already.

They would need to be willing to have their full name and photograph published as part of a news story.

All storytellers will be handled sensitively by our experienced regional communications team and engagement colleagues will be kept in the loop throughout the process.

Interviews will be carried out during April and May 2022.

If you are able to reach out on your local networks to encourage Deaf people living with cancer to share their experience it would be very much appreciated!

The interview process:

If you have a potential storyteller who has agreed to share their experience and support the media activity, please email Chloe Ingham in the Macmillan External Communications team first – cingham(at)macmillan.org.uk

Chloe will then set up an interview either in person or on zoom with an interpreter at a time which is convenient to the person with cancer.

They will be asked about their diagnosis, the support they received and any barriers they encountered.

The person living with cancer will have the opportunity to approve their quotes before publication and full consent will be obtained.

If you need anymore information please contact Chloe Ingham in the Macmillan External Communications Team: cingham(at)macmillan.org.uk or 07725257671
