Additional funding for Additional Learning Needs provision

Today the Minister for Education and Welsh Language has announced an additional £4.5 million in 2021-22 to support Additional Learning Needs (ALN) provision across Wales.

Of this funding, £4 million funding will go to special schools and specialist units in Wales, and £500,000 will go to third sector ALN organisations via Children in Wales.

Changes to ALN implementation timeframe

The Minister for Education and Welsh Language has today announced the decision to extend the time available to move children during the first year of implementation by one year.

This means that children who were due to move to the ALN system between January 2022 and August 2022, will now move to the ALN system between January 2022 and August 2023.

This extension and reorganisation means that schools, PRUs and local authorities will now be required to move fewer children in the first two years of implementation.

We are currently amending the existing guidance and further information about how commencement will work in years two and three of implementation, including guidance will be published in the summer term.

Further information available in this letter from Owain Lloyd - Director of Education and the Welsh Language

Thank you for continuing to provide the information, specialist support and extra resources to meet the needs of children and young people with ALN.
