The Road Safety Trust supports projects and research aimed at making roads across the UK safer for all road users. A range of organisations are eligible to apply for grant support, including registered charities, Community Interest Companies, statutory agencies such as local authorities, fire and rescue services and police forces, and universities.
The following grants are available to help develop innovative approaches to road safety, including research:
1. Small Grants of between £10,000 to £30,000 over a two-year period. The Trust’s Small Grants programme has a budget of £180,000 for 2022. The main aim of the Small Grants Programme is to improve road safety at a local level. The Spring 2022 round will focus for the first time on supporting previously funded and completed projects to the implementation stage. Eligible applications will need to build on the previous learning and evidence through pilots and trials of new innovations, expansion of successful trials across a new area and/or evaluating existing interventions. The Trust is looking for interventions in the following 4 areas that link either to local, regional or national priorities and show a proposed link to reducing casualties:
o Community Corners – a low cost, community-led street design approach to traffic calming.
o Improving Driver Behaviour through Mindfulness – to trial mindfulness research in a practical way to improve road safety at either a local, regional or national level.
o Mobile Engaged –tackling mobile phone use by drivers, and
o Targeting Road Injury Prevention (TRIP) – using data and intelligence to understand who is causing serious collisions and to develop road safety campaigns.
2. Major themed grants for projects which focus on the Trust’s annual theme. Details of its 2022 theme is expected to announced in early autumn, probably in mid September. Agencies interested in applying are advised to contact the Trust or regularly check its website for updates.
Please note that the Trust will expect applicant to have sought and secured matched funding prior to applying.
All applications should:
o Generate new knowledge about what road safety measures work.
o Influence road safety policy and practice.
o Support partnership working and collaboration, and
o Translate ideas into new measures.
To apply, eligible organisations should use the Trust’s application portal (applicants are required to create an account should be created in the first instance). Further information and guidance can be found on the Trust’s website.
The application deadline for Small Grants is Tuesday 26th April 2022, with successful applicants expected to be announced in June. Details of the Major Grants programme, together with its theme for 2022, is expected to be announced in September.
