The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art is an educational charity that champions new ways of understanding British art history and culture.

The Charity's Event Support Grants are specifically designed to support institutions in hosting events in the field of British art or architectural history such as lectures, conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars for scholars or provided at a scholarly level for the general public.

The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the fields of British art and architectural history, and of British visual culture understood more broadly, from the medieval period to the present day.

All supported events must have a clear art-historical perspective, including those that focus on recent or contemporary artistic practice.

All applications must demonstrate that British art, architecture or visual culture provides a substantial focus for their event. Event Support Grants are open to institutional applicants only. However, applications for collaborative events are permitted, providing one of the institutions must be nominated as the lead agency for the purposes of grant administration.

Grants up to £3,000 are available for:

o Allocation of free or reduced-fee places for students
o Catering costs.
o Equipment hire for producing video recordings and/or audio formats.
o Fees associated with virtual event hosting platforms (for example, Zoom subscription).
o Printing and publicity.
o Speaker fees/honorariums.
o Staffing costs.
o Tools to increase accessibility of the event (for example, live captioning, translator hire, live stream capabilities and equipment hire such as wheelchair ramps, induction loop facility etc.),
 and
o Travel and accommodation costs for speakers.

Applications will be assessed according to their academic rigour, originality, and contribution to scholarship. Funding is not available for events focusing on archaeology, current architecture practice, or the performing arts.

To apply for an Event Support Grant applicants are required to use the online system available on the Centre's website. Once registered, the online application form will be made available (a downloadable example of the application form is available on the charity’s website).

Applications for the Autumn 2022 round opened in August 2022 and will close on Friday 30 September 2022.
