The Headley Trust is one of a number of Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts that will consider requests for grant support from charities that meet its grant-making priorities. The Trust awards grants to UK registered charities and charitable organisations working in the following areas for innovative schemes that can be successfully replicated or become self-sustaining
1. Arts and Heritage in the UK, in particular:
o Archaeology.
o Arts education including digitisation and outreach.
o Conservation of industrial, maritime and built heritage.
o Display, study and acquisition of British ceramics.
o Headley Museums Archaeological Acquisition Fund (intended to help museums secure and display notable finds), and
o Regional museums and galleries, with special consideration for curatorial support and acquisitions.
2. Arts and Heritage Overseas, in particular:
o Conservation and recording of heritage (including ecclesiastical and vernacular architecture, archaeology and cultural artefacts), primarily in South Eastern Europe (Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina) as well as Ethiopia.
o Locally led organisations employing local experts, and
o Raising awareness of heritage issues in these countries; supporting the capacity of new heritage NGOs, training the next generation of conservation and heritage professionals, and engaging young people in their heritage.
3. Cathedrals and Major Churches, in particular:
o Applications for energy efficient measures if they are part of a wider appeal for fabric conservation.
o Applications for fire and burglar alarms.
o Applications for solar panels and photovoltaic cells.
o Restoration or repair work to the fabric of ancient cathedrals, parish church cathedrals and large churches of exceptional architectural merit that were built before 1850, and
o The conservation of monuments.
4. Education, in particular:
o Bursary support for vocational training in conservation and heritage skills and UK graduate students (dance) and postgraduate students (music), and
o Support for music projects in primary schools.
5. Health and Social Welfare - please note that the Trust is not currently accepting applications as the budget is fully committed until at least April 2024. When it is open, funding is available for:
o Projects to improve older people's quality of life in residential care homes, including supporting people with dementia.
o Support for carers of older people (local and national).
o Support for disadvantaged families and young people, and
o Support for older people to live independently for as long as possible.
6. Developing Countries, in particular:
o The poorest anglophone (i.e. English speaking) countries in Africa that focus on:
> Education and employment interventions for women and girls.
> Locally led organisations employing local experts, and
> Water, sanitation and hygiene, and community health programmes.
There are no minimum or maximum grant levels. Grants made during the year ended 5 April 2022 totalled £2,934,514 and ranged from £15,000 to £500,000 (to Worcester College, University of Oxford) . The majority of grants were for £30,000 or less. There is no specific requirement for matched funding. Please note that this is an exceptionally competitive grant scheme in which only a relatively small percentage of applications are successful.
Funding is not available for:
o Education centres, conferences, exhibitions or heritage spaces (under the Cathedrals and Major Churches priority).
o Educational fees.
o Expeditions.
o Individuals, or
o Organs, clocks, bells, plumbing, kitchens or heating (under the Cathedrals and Major Churches priority).
