Tony & Noreen Daniell originally founded what is now the Daniell Trust in 1993 in order to support charitable organisations close to their hearts. The Trust’s overarching objective is to improve the care and education of children (or others) with severe learning difficulties and to encourage environmental conservation, including wildlife and buildings.

The Trust has decided to launch a new programme of grants for 2023. It has previously distributed small grants but is now looking to spend the remainder of its assets over the next few years on more significant, sustainable projects that will leave a lasting legacy to the Trust’s founders. Grants of between £50,000-£250,000 are now available. Grants can be for 1-3 years, providing the overall limit of £250,000 is not exceeded. Around 20 grants are expected to be awarded.

The Daniell Trust provides grants for registered charities in England. Scotland and Wales operating in the following fields:

1. The care and education of children and young people with severe learning difficulties, and
2. Environmental conservation, including projects with a wildlife focus combined with local community engagement. Funding will also be considered for schemes solely concerned with the conservation of valuable natural habitat.

Applications are invited for both revenue and capital projects. Revenue costs can include salaries, programme or service running costs. Capital costs can include refurbishment, equipment and new builds. Overhead costs directly related to delivery of the project are also eligible. Applicants to the environmental measure must have a track record of running nature-based initiatives, ideally those which engage the community and children with additional needs.

Applications are welcomed from anywhere in England, Wales and Scotland. However, priority will be given to projects based in the following areas: Anglesey and Pembrokeshire in Wales, Shropshire and North Yorkshire in England, and the West Highlands in Scotland.

During the year ended 31st December 2021, the Trust awarded a number of small grants totalling £60,000 to charities. The Trust provides a number of examples of previously supported applicants on its website

To coincide with its revised approach to awarding grants, the Trust has introduced a 2-stage application process. This requires applicants to complete an initial Expression of Interest form. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit a full application, expected to open to applications on Friday 26th May 2023 and to be submitted by Friday 21st July 2023.

Further information, guidance and the Expression of Interest form is available on the Trust’s website.

The deadline for completion of the Expression of Interest form is Friday 31st March 2023.
