We’re delighted to invite you to our third event entitled ‘Rethinking respite for carers of people with dementia’ that takes place on 27 January from 1 to 2pm via Microsoft Teams with guest speaker Nick Andrews of Swansea University. Book your free place now from Eventbrite.

Respite is a short break, from an hour to several weeks, that lets carers of people with dementia have time away from their caring role to do some of the things that matter most to them. It may be a chance to rest, switch off and a have period away from the challenges and responsibilities of caring or pursue education or employment.

However, research by Arksey et al (2004) identified that whilst respite care is the most asked for service by carers of people with dementia, its uptake is less than expected.

Reasons cited for this are the poor match with the specific needs of carers and the people they support. One size fits all respite can cause more harm than good, making carers feel guilty or worried about the welfare of the people they support who can also find the experience traumatic.

Nick will share key messages from research regarding an approach to carer assessment that supports the identification of bespoke respite and then outline some innovative approaches to respite and key principles for effective ‘short breaks’ that were co-produced with carers in a review of respite in West Wales.

In the discussion, we invite Network Partners of Carers Trust Wales and colleagues in local authorities and third sector organisations to share positive practices in providing respite locally.
