Information: Age Cymru Dyfed - Befriending Life Links - 2020-2023

The charity is delighted to announce we’ve been awarded funding from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Social Services programme for an innovative new befriending project - Befriending Life Links - Building a Befriending Community.

Working across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion & Pembrokeshire, Age Cymru Dyfed’s new and exciting project, Befriending Life Links is set to change the face of befriending by focussing on building a community rather than a service and supporting the creation and delivery of a sustainable befriending strategy in partnership with other 3 rd sector organisations, creating an infinite loop of opportunities, thus spreading the responsibility, across the sector.

Inspiring the culture /philosophy of co-producing sustainable befriending opportunities, in partnership with older people and the third sector, whereby older people become part of their own solution. It will work to expand befriending options for supporting individuals who then become consultants for change.

It’s a fluid project, recognising that people, irrespective of culture, mental capacity or any other label move through and within a variety of stages of isolation and loneliness. The project aims to co-produce bespoke solutions with the individual, therefore, the project has no criteria for access.

A home visiting service will be the first step in the process, creating the cohort of consultants who will inform the types of befriending to develop, and creating volunteers to support this change. This is an ethos of the two-way relationship. This will lead to the development of local hubs of older people and organisations that are expected to continue post project.

Befriending Life Links is an Integrated and non-hierarchical befriending project, built on a foundation of empowerment for older people, designed to be fluid enough to respond to the changing landscape of their health & social needs. It will be important to closely monitor this as a new and innovative strategy for the region, as the findings have capacity for social impact on a much wider scale, both within mainstream service provision and within the context of wider community.
