TESCO BAGS OF HELP COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAMME REOPENS TO APPLICATIONS WITH REVISED GRANTS LEVELS

Grants up to £2,000 for a wide range of UK community groups, organisations, charities, schools and other not-for-profit organisations with seeking capital improvements for local community projects.

Who can apply: any form of UK not for profit organisation including (please note that this is not an exclusive list): voluntary and community organisations, registered charities, Community Interest Companies, “Friends of” groups, schools, health organisations such as a Primary Care Trust, NHS Hospital Trust, Foundation Hospital, Parish, Town, or Community Councils, social housing providers and local authorities.

The Tesco Bags of Help Community Grants programme has been closed for a while as Tesco PLC has been reviewing the scheme. It has now reopened with amended funding levels, extended voting timescales and a slightly narrower eligibility criteria. The overarching aim of the scheme is to support local community groups, organisations, charities, schools and other not-for-profit organisations through awards for equipment, activities and refurbishing or developing buildings and outdoor spaces. Proposals can be a stand-along project or a discrete, self-contained part of a larger scheme or part of a phased project.

Examples of eligible projects could include (please note this is not an exclusive list):

o Purchasing items which will benefit local community groups such as sports kit, specialised medical equipment, art and crafts materials, spades, litter pickers, camping equipment.
o Improvements to a building that benefits the local community such as a Scout or Guide hut, church or village hall, or changing facilities for sports.
o Developing an outdoor space play area, allotment, park, school grounds, woodland or wildlife area.
o Running a community event or activity such as fun runs, village fete, clean-up day, tree planting, bird watch, 
and
o Supporting seasonal activities such as purchasing new Christmas lights, supporting a Christmas meal for the homeless or a Diwali celebration event for the community.

Three community projects in each local area will be voted on by customers in Tesco stores throughout the UK, with projects changing every 3 months (before the review, projects were changed every two months).

Following the vote, grants will be awarded as follows:

o 1st place - up to £2,000.
o 2nd place - up to £1,000.
o 3rd place - up to £500.

Match funding is not required as the scheme can fund 100% of the total project costs

A wide range of not-for-profits in the UK may apply (see list above) so long that they have a governing document and a bank account.

Funding is not available for:

o Organisations that make a profit.
o Individuals.
o Projects based on sites used for religious or political purposes.
o Projects on sites where a charge is made to access the project location (children’s farms, play areas on private land etc).
o Projects which cannot be completed within 12 months of the grant being received.
o Work that has already taken place.
o Individual allotments plots for personal benefit.
o Projects that involve a fee that may be a barrier to participation.
o Political donations.
o Fundraising activities or challenges.
o Running costs and organisation overheads.
o Conferences or seminars.
o Activities which collect funds for redistribution to other charities or individuals.
o Overseas appeals.
o Expeditions or overseas travel.
o Travel and accommodation costs.
o Promotion of a religious or political cause.
o Marketing promotions, 
or
o Research projects.

Applications and reapplications may be made at any time.

To begin an application, organisations are required to complete an Eligibility Quiz. This will require the postcode of the nearest Tesco store to the proposed project. A list of all Tesco stores can be found at this store locator.

Once the Eligibility Quiz has been completed, successful applicants will be provided with a link to the full application form. The applications are then assessed by Groundwork to ensure that they are eligible. This will be followed up by Tesco shortlisting groups. The final projects will then go forward to the in-store vote.
