Homelessness Symposium

12 November 2019

Park Inn Cardiff City Centre

Have you seen the programme for this year's Homelessness Symposium? Download it here.

Join us at the heart of discussion about how we can end homelessness in Wales, learning from the latest research and practice from Wales, Scotland and Ireland, listening to the views and experiences of young people in the secure estate, women and LGBT+ people, and influencing future policy, standards and action.

The Homelessness Action Group's work towards ending homelessness in Wales has inspired multiple sessions during the day. The group's chair, Crisis' Jon Sparkes, will update us on the work of the group so far, and we'll provide opportunities to influence the group's recommendations to the Welsh Government. There will also be a chance to hear from Mike Burns, of Aberdeen Cyrenians, about how they turned recommendations into practice following a similar process in Scotland.

Of course, we'll pay due attention to important areas of service delivery itself, in workshops and information sessions about assertive outreachemergency accommodation standardsHousing First accreditationending evictions into homelessness, and autism.

As usual, we'll have some input from academic experts within and beyond Wales. Dr Jennifer Hoolachan of Cardiff University will present on her report, with Dr Harriet Pierpoint of the University of South Wales, into homelessness services for young people in the secure estate. Later on, Paula Mayock, Assistant Professor of Youth Research at Trinity College Dublin will discuss her work on the experiences of women in the homelessness system and suggest ways we can work differently. We’ll also hear about the experiences of LGBT+ people through activist Rudy, researcher Edith England and end Youth Homelessness Cymru.

We're also pleased to be able to present a session with Shirish Kulkarni, a representative of the Bureau for Investigative Journalism (TBIJ), about their investigations into homelessness in the UK and their review of affordability and housing solutions. There will also be an update on the legacy of the Homeless World Cup 2019 in Cardiff and how you can get involved.

I hope you can find the time in your busy schedules to take a day to engage, connect and take away a lot of reflection and learning that will develop your work.
