Volunteer roles adapting to a crisis

Beth Lowden from Blind Veterans UK explains how one of their regular volunteers has adapted to the Covid-19 situation.

Blind Veterans UK volunteer, Matt Brickley, on the phone

Matt Brickley has been a volunteer for Blind Veterans UK for four months. Being ex-services Matt wanted to work with veterans and give something back to his community and joined as a Walking volunteer with one of the veterans, accompanying them twice a week on a walk through the Beacons. For the veterans that the charity supports, volunteers like Matt give them an opportunity to share their stories, reduce isolation and connect to others as well as carrying on doing their hobbies and interests.

Volunteer Co-ordinator Beth Lowden explained how Matt has taken on a different role since the Covid-19 pandemic started.

“Due to the pandemic Matt's role has changed and he has kindly offered his services to provide telephone support to our veterans. Matt being a veteran himself is able to connect and have a sense of camaraderieand a sense of trust is present. The relationships that are present are wonderful and Matt is providing an invaluable service."

Matt said, “My volunteering is enjoyable, rewarding and enables you to give something back to your community.”
