The Penelope Martin Charitable Trust, which has its offices in Leeds, Yorkshire, is a general grant-making charity with the ability to make grants for a diverse range of charitable causes.
Its objectives state that its trustees have:
“Power to apply the income to such charitable foundations and for such charitable purposes as the Trustees shall from time to time in their absolute discretion determine. The Trustees are not restricted in their charitable benevolence nor do they regard themselves as bound by precedent”.
Grants are available to UK registered charities working in the UK and/or overseas. Overseas grants have a particular focus on UK charities working in Kenya.
During the year ended 5 April 2021, the Trust awarded grants totalling £159,750 to a wide variety of independent charities. Given that its annual accounts mention grant support for a ‘wide variety of charities’ it may be that awards are likely to be many and small, rather than few and large.
The Trust does not have a website or publish a list of grant recipients in its annual accounts. Neither does it appear in other directories. We are therefore unable to provide an indicative level of grant award or an analysis of specific areas the Trust is keen to support. However, the areas most commonly favoured by grant-making trusts tend to be:
o Children and young people.
o Education.
o The arts.
O Health.
o Disability, and
o Environment.
We expect the Penelope Martin Charitable Trust to have a focus on some of the above areas.
Further information about the work of the Trust can be found on the Charity Commission website.
