Make A Difference Locally is a charity established by the retailer Nisa. Nisa is a £1.45 billion turnover company which exists to provide benefits to approximately 1,300 independent grocery retailers, operating almost 3,500 stores. The local stores are referred to in this item as “Nisa partners”.

Make A Difference Locally raises funds in Nisa partner stores from sales of all Co-op and Heritage own-label products, a percentage of which goes into a virtual fund for retailers to donate. Additional funds can also be raised via in-store collecting tins, coin spinners and clothing banks. Stores are then able to donate these funds to a local charity or good cause of their choice within a 10-mile radius. You can draw a 10-mile radius of any given postcode using the Free Map Tools website.

To find out if a Nisa partner is retaining in your area, please use the postcode checker on the Make A Difference Locally website (scroll down to the foot of the page).

Making a Difference Locally has opened Round 3 of its Heart of the Community Awards programme, with a focus on supporting communities across the UK to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June. The first two rounds of the Heart of the Community Awards resulted in nearly 90 good causes nationwide receiving donations totalling £310,000.

The Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated with an additional public bank holiday on Friday 3rd June, 2022 (the Spring Bank Holiday has been moved to Thursday 2nd June 2022).

Nisa partners (i.e. local shop retailers) can nominate a local group, charity or good cause to receive a grant of up to £1,000 for an activity to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, such as:

o An afternoon tea.
o A garden party,
or
o A street party.

Grants can be used for such things as (please note that this is not an exclusive list):

o Decorations.
o Entertainment.
o Equipment.
o Food and drink,
and/or
o Venue hire.

Nisa partners choose and nominate a cause via the Make A Difference Locally website, providing information on the good cause and event. Make A Difference Locally wants charities and community groups to contact or visit their local Nisa store directly, referencing the Heart of the Community Awards and requesting that their charity and event be nominated.

Nominations are open until Friday 18 March 2022.

From this, 70 recipients will be chosen to receive a grant. Each winning good cause will also receive a decorative Making a Difference Locally Point of Sale kit with bunting.
