The Definition of Community Cohesion

What is Community Cohesion?

The Welsh Assembly Government definition of Community Cohesion is:

Community Cohesion is a way in which different people can live in communities alongside each other with mutual respect to understand and appreciate differences. It also means:

  • everybody has an equal chance to take part
  • everybody gets equal use of services
  • everybody values differences
  • accepting and supporting each other
  • overcoming problems

What are the issues in Wales?

Our communities are facing many challenges to make sure that everybody get on together. Some of these are:

  • people moving in and out of Wales, so communities are changing
  • people feeling left out or isolated
  • poverty can lead to poor community cohesion
  • a higher demand on public services
  • a lack of community facilities and services in some rural areas
  • supporting Welsh-speaking communities
