Concessionary Fares Initiative

Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations Community Transport (CT) Section was successful in gaining funds to enable CT schemes in Powys to participate in a 3 year pilot project.

The funding is provided by the Welsh Assembly to transport people with severe disabilities and mental health problems who do not currently have access to public transport and require improved access in order to meet their transport needs.

The Concessionary Fares Travel Scheme started in January 2006. There are currently 18 community transport organisations across Powys who operate a combination of Dial-a-Ride, Community Car and Taxi Card schemes (15 of which provide concessionary travel).

If you have a physical disability, a sensory impairment (sight, hearing and speech), a learning disability, or have an enduring mental health problem you may qualify to use the scheme under the current concessionary fare pilot project.  This funding is limited and does not cover any membership fee implemented by the scheme.

Dial-a-Ride, Community Car or Taxi Card Schemes have different uses. They can be used to get to medical appointments, to go shopping, to make social visits etc. Your local scheme will tell you what they are able to do, if they have the capacity to provide transport for new clients and how much of the cost of a journey they are able to cover, journeys are provided free under the concessionary fares but only for a limited period.
