An opportunity to celebrate the Welsh language in your community, workplace or school!

What is Shwmae Sumae Day?

We celebrated the first Shwmae Sumae day on October 15, 2013 to promote the idea of starting every conversation with shwmae, su'mae or shwdi! The event aims to show that the Welsh language belongs to us all - fluent speakers, learners or those shy about their Welsh.

Who celebrates Shwmae Sumae day?

YOU! It's an opportunity to have fun and share the language - in the shop, leisure centre, at work, with friends. In the past it has been celebrated by schools, restaurants, shops, businesses and radio stations.

What happens ?

Events are held from Mold to Newport, from Anglesey to Patagonia .
Coleg Ceredigion students produced a video to promote the day as did the people of Pembrokeshire. Archbishop MCGrath School, Bridgend organised a day of various activities

How can you celebrate Shwmae Sumae Day this year?

Go to Shwmae Sumae Facebook and Twitter account for some ideas to inspire you, and also look under the resources tab on this website.

Who is co-ordinating Shwmae Sumae Day ?

Dathlu'r Gymraeg is an umbrella group made up of 26 Welsh organizations and societies (more information under the 'Dathlu'r Gymraeg Membership' tab).

How can we contact you ?

Go to Shwmae Sumae Facebook, Twitter or email
There could be a slight delay before you receive a response, as we only have a part time member of staff.

What do I do next?

Organise an event, but remember to let us know what, where and when.

Shwmae Sumae Day does not receive grant aid but depends totally on your enthusiasm, creativity, goodwill and inspiration! Good luck! Pob lwc!
