For general information about establishing an effective process for recruiting and inducting new trustees see the PAVO information sheet 5.4 Recruitment, selection and induction.
The UK Governance Hub produces the Good Practice in Trustee Recruitment Toolkit. This is a very comprehensive resource (complete with model forms, adverts etc.) to help you plan and implement a recruitment campaign. They also produce more specialised guidance Starting on the Right Track - A Guide To Recruiting and Inducting a New Chair.
If you are a charity, the Charity Commission publication CC30 Finding new trustees - What charities need to know also contains useful guidance. They also publish an interesting background report RS1 Trustee recruitment, Selection and Induction.
Although many trustees are often recruited through personal contacts, it may be appropriate to more widely publicise your trustee vacancies to attract people with the skills and expertise that your group or organisation needs.
One way to recruit new trustees from your local community is by advertising your vacancies through Powys' 12 local Volunteer Bureau. Their contact details can be viewed here.
There are also a number of websites where groups can advertise their trustee and volunteering vacancies. The Volunteering in Wales website is the main website in Wales.
There are other UK-wide websites where trustee vacancies can be posted (some of these are specialist recruitment services which charge for placing vacancy adverts);
- Charity Job
- Charity People
- Charity Trustee Networks
- The website of Governance magazine
- The REACH website
- The VolResource website
There are also several websites that are intended to recruit volunteers in England. These might be useful if you are a UK-wide organisations or if your group operates close to the English border;
There are also a number of specialist voluntary sector publications where adverts can be placed (these generally charge for the service);
It is also worth considering using local newspapers or community newsletters to help publicise your trustee vacancies.
This can be done by placing adverts. However, if you are sending a press release about some event or activity by your group, you could include a sentence or two saying that the group is looking for new trustees and provide your contact details for any readers who might be interested.
